IcouldnotrefrainfromalaughatthewaythegameappearedtoPoirot,andmylittlefriendsmiledatmeaffectionately,bearingnomalice.Thenheasked:
“ButM.Renauld,withoutdoubtheplayedthegolf?”
“Yes,hewasakeengolfer.It’smainlyowingtohim,andtohislargesubscriptions,thatthisworkisbeingcarriedforward.Heevenhadasayinthedesigningofit.”
Poirotnoddedthoughtfully.
Thenheremarked:
“Itwasnotaverygoodchoicetheymade—ofaspottoburythebody?Whenthemenbegantodiguptheground,allwouldhavebeendiscovered.”
“Exactly,”criedGiraudtriumphantly.“Andthatprovesthattheywerestrangerstotheplace.It’sanexcellentpieceofindirectevidence.”
“Yes,”saidPoirotdoubtfully.“Noonewhoknewwouldburyabodythere—unless—unless—theywantedittobediscovered.Andthatisclearlyabsurd,isitnot?”
Girauddidnoteventroubletoreply.
“Yes,”saidPoirot,inasomewhatdissatisfiedvoice.“Yes—undoubtedly—absurd!”
