“Iknownothingabouther—butIcanguessagooddeal.WemaytakeitforgrantedthathernameisBellaDuveen,andsincethatnamewasfaintlyfamiliartoM.Stonor,thoughevidentlynotinconnectionwiththeRenauldfamily,itisprobablethatsheisonthestage.JackRenauldwasayoungmanwithplentyofmoney,andtwentyyearsofage.Thestageissuretohavebeenthehomeofhisfirstlove.Ittallies,too,withM.Renauld’sattempttoplacateherwithacheque.IthinkIshallfindherallright—especiallywiththehelpofthis.”
AndhebroughtoutthephotographIhadseenhimtakefromJackRenauld’sdrawer.“WithlovefromBella,”wasscrawledacrossthecorner,butitwasnotthatwhichheldmyeyesfascinated.Thelikenesswasnotfirstrate—butforallthatitwasunmistakabletome.Ifeltacoldsinking,asthoughsomeunutterablecalamityhadbefallenme.
