"Getoff!"splutteredtheRat,withhismouthfull.
"ThoughtIshouldfindyouhereallright,"saidtheOttercheerfully."TheywereallinagreatstateofalarmalongRiverBankwhenIarrivedthismorning.Ratneverbeenhomeallnight—norMoleeither—somethingdreadfulmusthavehappened,theysaid;andthesnowhadcoveredupallyourtracks,ofcourse.ButIknewthatwhenpeoplewereinanyfixtheymostlywenttoBadger,orelseBadgergottoknowofitsomehow,soIcamestraightoffhere,throughtheWildWoodandthesnow!My!itwasfine,comingthroughthesnowastheredsunwasrisingandshowingagainsttheblacktree-trunks!Asyouwentalonginthestillness,everynowandthenmassesofsnowslidoffthebranchessuddenlywithaflop!makingyoujumpandrunforcover.Snow-castlesandsnow-cavernshadsprungupoutofnowhereinthenight—andsnowbridges,terraces,ramparts—Icouldhavestayedandplayedwiththemforhours.Hereandtheregreatbrancheshadbeentornawaybythesheerweightofthesnow,androbinsperchedandhoppedonthemintheirperkyconceitedway,justasiftheyhaddoneitthemselves.
