Whenallwasquiteready,theBadgertookadarklanterninonepaw,graspedhisgreatstickwiththeother,andsaid,"Nowthen,followme!Molefirst,‘cosI’mverypleasedwithhim;Ratnext;Toadlast.Andlookhere,Toady!Don’tyouchattersomuchasusual,oryou’llbesentback,assureasfate!"
TheToadwassoanxiousnottobeleftoutthathetookuptheinferiorpositionassignedtohimwithoutamurmur,andtheanimalssetoff.TheBadgerledthemalongbytheriverforalittleway,andthensuddenlyswunghimselfovertheedgeintoaholeintheriverbank,alittleabovethewater.
