Thepoop-poop!drewnearerandnearer,thecarcouldbeheardtoturnintotheinn-yardandcometoastop,andToadhadtoholdontothelegofthetabletoconcealhisover-masteringemotion.Presentlythepartyenteredthecoffee-room,hungry,talkative,andgay,volubleontheirexperiencesofthemorningandthemeritsofthechariotthathadbroughtthemalongsowell.Toadlistenedeagerly,allears,foratime;atlasthecouldstanditnolonger.Heslippedoutoftheroomquietly,paidhisbillatthebar,andassoonashegotoutsidesaunteredroundquietlytotheinn-yard."Therecannotbeanyharm,"hesaidtohimself,"inmyonlyjustlookingatit!"
Thecarstoodinthemiddleoftheyard,quiteunattended,thestable-helpsandotherhangers-onbeingallattheirdinner.Toadwalkedslowlyroundit,inspecting,criticising,musingdeeply.
