ThereafterBenjamincontrivedtobreaksomethingeveryday,buthedidthesethingsonlybecausetheywereexpectedofhim,andbecausehewasbynatureobliging.

Hewasaspuzzledasanyoneelseattheapparentlyadvancedageofhismindandbodyatbirth.Hereaduponitinthemedicaljournal,butfoundthatnosuchcasehadbeenpreviouslyrecorded.Athisfather’surginghemadeanhonestattempttoplaywithotherboys,andfrequentlyhejoinedinthemildergames—footballshookhimuptoomuch,andhefearedthatincaseofafracturehisancientboneswouldrefusetoknit.
Whenhewasfivehewassenttokindergarten,whereheinitiatedintotheartofpastinggreenpaperonorangepaper,ofweavingcolouredmapsandmanufacturingeternalcardboardnecklaces.Hewasinclinedtodrowseofftosleepinthemiddleofthesetasks,ahabitwhichbothirritatedandfrightenedhisyoungteacher.Tohisreliefshecomplainedtohisparents,andhewasremovedfromtheschool.TheRogerButtonstoldtheirfriendsthattheyfelthewastooyoung.
