Harryrecognizedtheunconsciousowlatonce—hisnamewasErrol,andhebelongedtotheWeasleyfamily.Harrydashedtothebed,untiedthecordsaroundErrol’slegs,tookofftheparcel,andthencarriedErroltoHedwig’scage.Errolopenedoneblearyeye,gaveafeeblehootofthanks,andbegantogulpsomewater.
Harryturnedbacktotheremainingowls.Oneofthem,thelargesnowyfemale,washisownHedwig.She,too,wascarryingaparcelandlookedextremelypleasedwithherself.ShegaveHarryanaffectionatenipwithherbeakasheremovedherburden,thenflewacrosstheroomtojoinErrol.
Harrydidn’trecognizethethirdowl,ahandsometawnyone,butheknewatoncewhereithadcomefrom,becauseinadditiontoathirdpackage,itwascarryingaletterbearingtheHogwartscrest.WhenHarryrelievedthisowlofitsburden,itruffleditsfeathersimportantly,stretcheditswings,andtookoffthroughthewindowintothenight.
HarrysatdownonhisbedandgrabbedErrol’spackage,rippedoffthebrownpaper,anddiscoveredapresentwrappedingoldandhisfirsteverbirthdaycard.
