So,withFangscamperingaroundthem,sniffingtreerootsandleaves,theyenteredtheforest. BytheglowofHarry’swand,theyfollowedthesteadytrickleofspidersmovingalongthepath. Theywalkedbehindthemforabouttwentyminutes,notspeaking,listeninghardfornoisesotherthanbreakingtwigsandrustlingleaves. Then,whenthetreeshadbecomethickerthanever,sothatthestarsoverheadwerenolongervisible,andHarry’swandshonealoneintheseaofdark, theysawtheirspiderguidesleavingthepath.
Harrypaused,tryingtoseewherethespidersweregoing,buteverythingoutsidehislittlesphereoflightwaspitch-black. Hehadneverbeenthisdeepintotheforestbefore. HecouldvividlyrememberHagridadvisinghimnottoleavetheforestpathlasttimehe’dbeeninhere. ButHagridwasmilesawaynow,probablysittinginacellinAzkaban,andhehadalsosaidtofollowthespiders.
SomethingwettouchedHarry’shandandhejumpedbackward,crushingRon’sfoot,butitwasonlyFang’snose.
"Whatd’youreckon?"HarrysaidtoRon,whoseeyeshecouldjustmakeout,reflectingthelightfromhiswand.
"We’vecomethisfar,"saidRon.
Sotheyfollowedthedartingshadowsofthespidersintothetrees.
