Theywalkedforwhatseemedlikeatleasthalfanhour,theirrobessnaggingonlow-slungbranchesandbrambles. Afterawhile,theynoticedthatthegroundseemedtobeslopingdownward,thoughthetreeswereasthickasever.
ThenFangsuddenlyletlooseagreat,echoingbark,makingbothHarryandRonjumpoutoftheirskins.
"What?"saidRonloudly,lookingaroundintothepitch-dark,andgrippingHarry’selbowveryhard.
"There’ssomethingmovingoverthere,"Harrybreathed. "Listen...soundslikesomethingbig..."
Theylistened. Somedistancetotheirright,thesomethingbigwassnappingbranchesasitcarvedapaththroughthetrees.

Thedarknessseemedtobepressingontheireyeballsastheystood,terrified,waiting. Therewasastrangerumblingnoiseandthensilence.

Theywaited,shivering,hardlydaringtomove.

Then,totheirright,cameasuddenblazeoflight,sobrightinthedarknessthatbothofthemflunguptheirhandstoshieldtheireyes.
