Duringthistime,Imademyroundinthewoodsforgameeveryday,whentherainadmittedme,andmadefrequentdiscoveriesinthesewalksofsomethingorothertomyadvantage; particularlyIfoundakindofwildpigeons,whobuilt,notaswoodpigeonsinatree,butratherashousepigeons,intheholesoftherocks. Andtakingsomeyoungones,Iendeavoredtobreedthemuptame,anddidso; butwhentheygrewoldertheyflewallaway,which,perhaps,wasatfirstforwantoffeedingthem,forIhadnothingtogivethem. However,Ifrequentlyfoundtheirnests,andgottheiryoungones,whichwereverygoodmeat.
AndnowinthemanagingmyhouseholdaffairsIfoundmyselfwantinginmanythings,whichIthoughtatfirstitwasimpossibleformetomake,asindeed,astosomeofthem,itwas.Forinstance,Icouldnevermakeacasktobehooped; Ihadasmallrunletortwo,asIobservedbefore,butIcouldneverarrivetothecapacityofmakingoneofthem,thoughIspentmanyweeksaboutit. Icouldneitherputintheheads,norjointthestavessotruetooneanotherastomakethemholdwater; soIgavethatalsoover.
Inthenextplace,Iwasatagreatlossforcandle; sothatassoonaseveritwasdark,whichwasgenerallybyseveno’clock,Iwasobligedtogotobed. IrememberedthelumpofbeeswaxwithwhichImadecandlesinmyAfricanadventure,butIhadnoneofthatnow.
