Atthesametimeithappened,afterIhadlaidmyschemeforthesettingupmytent,andmakingthecave,thatastormofrainfallingfromathickdarkcloud,asuddenflashoflightninghappened,andafterthatagreatclapofthunder,asisnaturallytheeffectofit. Iwasnotsomuchsurprisedwiththelightning,asIwaswithathoughtwhichdartedintomymindasswiftasthelightningitself. Omypowder! MyveryheartsunkwithinmewhenIthoughtthatatoneblastallmypowdermightbedestroyed,onwhich,notmydefenceonly,buttheprovidingmefood,asIthought,entirelydepended. Iwasnothingnearsoanxiousaboutmyowndanger;thoughhadthepowdertookfire,Ihadneverknownwhohadhurtme.
Suchimpressiondidthismakeuponme,thatafterthestormwasoverIlaidasideallmyworks,mybuilding,andfortifying,andappliedmyselftomakebagsandboxestoseparatethepowder, andkeepitalittleandalittleinaparcel,inhopethatwhatevermightcomeitmightnotalltakefireatonce,andtokeepitsoapartthatitshouldnotbepossibletomakeonepartfireanother.
