           Thepoorsavagewhofled,buthadstopped,thoughhesawbothhisenemiesfallenandkilled,ashethought,yetwassofrightedwiththefireandnoiseofmypiece,thathestoodstock-still,andneithercameforwardnorwentbackward,thoughheseemedratherinclinedtoflystillthantocomeon. Ihallooedagaintohim,andmadesignstocomeforward,whichheeasilyunderstood,andcamealittleway,thenstoppedagain,andthenalittlefurther;andstoppedagain; andIcouldthenperceivethathestoodtrembling,asifhehadbeentakenprisoner,andhadjustbeentobekilled,ashistwoenemieswere. Ibeckonedhimagaintocometome,andgavehimallthesignsofencouragementthatIcouldthinkof; andhecamenearerandnearer,kneelingdowneveryoftenortwelvesteps,intokenofacknowledgmentformysavinghislife. Ismiledathim,andlookpleasantly,andbeckonedtohimtocomestillnearer. Atlengthhecameclosetome,andthenhekneeleddownagain,kissedtheground,andlaidhisheadupontheground,andtakingmebythefoot,setmyfootuponhishead. This,itseems,wasintokenofswearingtobemyslaveforever. Itookhimup,andmademuchofhim,andencouragedhimallIcould.
