Asmynewpatron,ormaster,hadtakenmehometohishouse,soIwasinhopesthathewouldtakemewithhimwhenhewenttoseaagain, believingthatitwouldsometimeorotherbehisfatetobetakenbyaSpanishorPortugalman-of-war;andthatthenIshouldbesetatliberty. Butthishopeofminewassoontakenaway;forwhenhewenttosea,heleftmeonshoretolookafterhislittlegarden,anddothecommondrudgeryofslavesabouthishouse; andwhenhecamehomeagainfromhiscruise,heorderedmetolieinthecabintolookaftertheship.
HereImeditatednothingbutmyescape,andwhatmethodImighttaketoeffectit,butfoundnowaythathadtheleastprobabilityinit; nothingpresentedtomakethesuppositionofitrational;forIhadnobodytocommunicateittothatwouldembarkwithme-nofellow-slave,noEnglishman,Irishman,orScotchmantherebutmyself; sothatfortwoyears,thoughIoftenpleasedmyselfwiththeimagination,yetIneverhadtheleastencouragingprospectofputtingitinpractice.
