           HadLydiaandhermotherknownthesubstanceofherconferencewithherfather,theirindignationwouldhardlyhavefoundexpressionintheirunitedvolubility. InLydia’simagination,avisittoBrightoncomprisedeverypossibilityofearthlyhappiness. Shesaw,withthecreativeeyeoffancy,thestreetsofthatgaybathing-placecoveredwithofficers. Shesawherselftheobjectofattention,totensandtoscoresofthematpresentunknown. Shesawallthegloriesofthecampitstentsstretchedforthinbeauteousuniformityoflines,crowdedwiththeyoungandthegay,anddazzlingwithscarlet; and,tocompletetheview,shesawherselfseatedbeneathatent,tenderlyflirtingwithatleastsixofficersatonce. 

           Hadsheknownhersistersoughttotearherfromsuchprospectsandsuchrealitiesasthese,whatwouldhavebeenhersensations? Theycouldhavebeenunderstoodonlybyhermother,whomighthavefeltnearlythesame. Lydia’sgoingtoBrightonwasallthatconsoledherforhermelancholyconvictionofherhusband’sneverintendingtogotherehimself.
