           "Mr.Wickhamisthesonofaveryrespectableman,whohadformanyyearsthemanagementofallthePemberleyestates,andwhosegoodconductinthedischargeofhistrustnaturallyinclinedmyfathertobeofservicetohim; andonGeorgeWickham,whowashisgodson,hiskindnesswasthereforeliberallybestowed. Myfathersupportedhimatschool,andafterwardsatCambridgemostimportantassistance,ashisownfather,alwayspoorfromtheextravaganceofhiswife,wouldhavebeenunabletogivehimagentleman’seducation. Myfatherwasnotonlyfondofthisyoungman’ssociety,whosemannerwerealwaysengaging;hehadalsothehighestopinionofhim,andhopingthechurchwouldbehisprofession,intendedtoprovideforhiminit. Asformyself,itismany,manyyearssinceIfirstbegantothinkofhiminaverydifferentmanner. Theviciouspropensitiesthewantofprinciple,whichhewascarefultoguardfromtheknowledgeofhisbestfriend,couldnotescapetheobservationofayoungmanofnearlythesameagewithhimself,andwhohadopportunitiesofseeinghiminunguardedmoments,whichMr.Darcycouldnothave. Hereagainshallgiveyoupaintowhatdegreeyouonlycantell. ButwhatevermaybethesentimentswhichMr.Wickhamhascreated,asuspicionoftheirnatureshallnotpreventmefromunfoldinghisrealcharacteritaddsevenanothermotive. 

           "Myexcellentfatherdiedaboutfiveyearsago; andhisattachmenttoMr.Wickhamwastothelastsosteady,thatinhiswillheparticularlyrecommendedittome,topromotehisadvancementinthebestmannerthathisprofessionmightallowandifhetookorders,desiredthatavaluablefamilylivingmightbehisassoonasitbecamevacant. Therewasalsoalegacyofonethousandpounds. Hisownfatherdidnotlongsurvivemine,andwithinhalfayearfromtheseevents,Mr.Wickhamwrotetoinformmethat,havingfinallyresolvedagainsttakingorders, hehopedIshouldnotthinkitunreasonableforhimtoexpectsomemoreimmediatepecuniaryadvantage,inlieuofthepreferment,bywhichhecouldnotbebenefited.
