           Herfellow-travellersthenextdaywerenotofakindtomakeherthinkhimlessagreeable. SirWilliamLucas,andhisdaughterMaria,agood-humouredgirl,butasempty-headedashimself,hadnothingtosaythatcouldbeworthhearing,andwerelistenedtowithaboutasmuchdelightastherattleofthechaise. Elizabethlovedabsurdities,butshehadknownSirWilliam’stoolong. Hecouldtellhernothingnewofthewondersofhispresentationandknighthood;andhiscivilitieswerewornout,likehisinformation. 

           Itwasajourneyofonlytwenty-fourmiles,andtheybeganitsoearlyastobeinGracechurchStreetbynoon. AstheydrovetoMr.Gardiner’sdoor,Janewasatadrawing-roomwindowwatchingtheirarrival;whentheyenteredthepassageshewastheretowelcomethem,andElizabeth,lookingearnestlyinherface,waspleasedtoseeithealthfulandlovelyasever. Onthestairswereatroopoflittleboysandgirls,whoseeagernessfortheircousin’sappearancewouldnotallowthemtowaitinthedrawing-room,andwhoseshyness,astheyhadnotseenherforatwelvemonth,preventedtheircominglower. Allwasjoyandkindness. Thedaypassedmostpleasantlyaway;themorninginbustleandshopping,andtheeveningatoneofthetheatres. 

           Elizabeththencontrivedtositbyheraunt. Theirfirstobjectwashersister;andshewasmoregrievedthanastonishedtohear,inreplytoherminuteinquiries,thatthoughJanealwaysstruggledtosupportherspirits,therewereperiodsofdejection. Itwasreasonable,however,tohopethattheywouldnotcontinuelong. Mrs.GardinergavehertheparticularsalsoofMissBingley’svisitinGracechurchStreet,andrepeatedconversationsoccurringatdifferenttimesbetweenJaneandherself,whichprovedthattheformerhad,fromherheart,givenuptheacquaintance. 

           Mrs.GardinerthenralliedhernieceonWickham’sdesertion,andcomplimentedheronbearingitsowell.
