           Thursdaywastobetheweddingday,andonWednesdayMissLucaspaidherfarewellvisit; andwhensherosetotakeleave,Elizabeth,ashamedofhermother’sungraciousandreluctantgoodwishes,andsincerelyaffectedherself,accompaniedheroutoftheroom. Astheywentdownstairstogether,Charlottesaid: 

           "Ishalldependonhearingfromyouveryoften,Eliza." 

           "Thatyoucertainlyshall." 

           "AndIhaveanotherfavourtoaskyou. Willyoucomeandseeme?" 

           "Weshalloftenmeet,Ihope,inHertfordshire." 

           "IamnotlikelytoleaveKentforsometime. Promiseme,therefore,tocometoHunsford." 

           Elizabethcouldnotrefuse,thoughsheforesawlittlepleasureinthevisit. 

           "MyfatherandMariaarecomingtomeinMarch,"addedCharlotte,"andIhopeyouwillconsenttobeoftheparty. Indeed,Eliza,youwillbeaswelcomeaseitherofthem." 

           Theweddingtookplace;thebrideandbridegroomsetoffforKentfromthechurchdoor,andeverybodyhadasmuchtosay,ortohear,onthesubjectasusual. Elizabethsoonheardfromherfriend; andtheircorrespondencewasasregularandfrequentasithadeverbeen;thatitshouldbeequallyunreservedwasimpossible. Elizabethcouldneveraddressherwithoutfeelingthatallthecomfortofintimacywasover,andthoughdeterminednottoslackenasacorrespondent,itwasforthesakeofwhathadbeen,ratherthanwhatwas.
