           ToMrs.Gardiner,Wickhamhadonemeansofaffordingpleasure,unconnectedwithhisgeneralpowers. Abouttenoradozenyearsago,beforehermarriage,shehadspentaconsiderabletimeinthatverypartofDerbyshiretowhichhebelonged. Theyhad,therefore,manyacquaintancesincommon; andthoughWickhamhadbeenlittletheresincethedeathofDarcy’sfather,itwasyetinhispowertogiveherfresherintelligenceofherformerfriendsthanshehadbeeninthewayofprocuring. 

           Mrs.GardinerhadseenPemberley,andknownthelateMr.Darcybycharacterperfectlywell. Hereconsequentlywasaninexhaustiblesubjectofdiscourse. IncomparingherrecollectionofPemberleywiththeminutedescriptionwhichWickhamcouldgive,andinbestowinghertributeofpraiseonthecharacterofitslatepossessor,shewasdelightingbothhimandherself. OnbeingmadeacquaintedwiththepresentMr.Darcy’streatmentofhim,shetriedtoremembersomeofthatgentleman’sreputeddispositionwhenquitealadwhichmightagreewithit,andwasconfidentatlastthatsherecollectedhavingheardMr.FitzwilliamDarcyformerlyspokenofasaveryproud,ill-naturedboy.
