Thereadercannothaveforgottenthattheeventofthetournamentwasdecidedbytheexertionsofanunknownknight,whom,onaccountofthepassiveandindifferentconductwhichhehadmanifestedontheformerpartoftheday,thespectatorshadentitled,"LeNoirFaineant".Thisknighthadleftthefieldabruptlywhenthevictorywasachieved;andwhenhewascalledupontoreceivetherewardofhisvalour,hewasnowheretobefound.Inthemeantime,whilesummonedbyheraldsandbytrumpets,theknightwasholdinghiscoursenorthward,avoidingallfrequentedpaths,andtakingtheshortestroadthroughthewoodlands.Hepausedforthenightatasmallhostelrylyingoutoftheordinaryroute,where,however,heobtainedfromawanderingminstrelnewsoftheeventofthetourney.
Onthenextmorningtheknightdepartedearly,withtheintentionofmakingalongjourney;theconditionofhishorse,whichhehadcarefullysparedduringtheprecedingmorning,beingsuchasenabledhimtotravelfarwithoutthenecessityofmuchrepose.Yethispurposewasbaffledbythedeviouspathsthroughwhichherode,sothatwheneveningcloseduponhim,heonlyfoundhimselfonthefrontiersoftheWestRidingofYorkshire.
