           AroundaminorG-typestarfairlyfarouttowardoneedgeofamedium-sizedgalaxytheplanetsofthatstarswungasusual,justastheyhadforbillionsofyears,undertheinfluenceofaslightlymodifiedinversesquarelawthatshapedthespacearoundthem.Threeofthemwerebigenough,asplanetsgo,tobenoticeable;therestweremerepebbles,concealedinthefieryskirtsoftheprimaryorlostintheblackouterreachesofspace.Allofthem,asisalwaysthecase,wereinfectedwiththatoddityofdistortedentropycalledlife;inthecasesofthethirdandfourthplanetstheirsurfacetemperaturescycledaroundthefreezingpointofhydrogenmonoxideinconsequencetheyhaddevelopedlifeformssimilarenoughtopermitadegreeofsocialcontact.

           OnthefourthpebbleouttheancientMartianswerenotinanyimportantsensedisturbedbythecontactwithEarth.ThenymphsoftheracestillbouncedjoyouslyaroundthesurfaceofMars,learningtolive,andeightoutofnineofthemdyingintheprocess.TheadultMartians,enormouslydifferentinbodyandmindfromthenymphs,stillhuddledinorunderthefaerie,gracefulcities,andwereasquietintheirbehaviorasthenymphswereboisterousyetwereevenbusierthanthenymphs,busywithacomplexandrichlifeofthemind.
