Whenthewaterinthehugelaundrycopperwasboiling,Frankgotthedishtubdownfromitshangingandfilledithalfwithhotwaterandhalfwithcold.Thenhewentouttotheshedandfetchedinanunopenedfive-galloncanofkerosene,tookabaroflyesoapfromthelaundryandstartedworkonBob.Eachheadwasbrieflydampedinthetub,severalcupsofrawkerosenepouredoverit,andthewholedraggled,greasymesslatheredwithsoap.Thekeroseneandlyeburned;theboyshowledandrubbedtheireyesraw,scratchingattheirreddened,tinglingscalpsandthreateningghastlyvengeanceonallDagos.
Feewenttohersewingbasketandtookoutherbigshears.ShecamebacktoMeggie,whohadnotdaredtomovefromthestoolthoughanhourandmorehadelapsed,andstoodwiththeshearsinherhand,staringatthebeautifulfallofhair.Thenshebegantocutit—snip!snip!—untillallthelongcurlswerehuddledinglisteningheapsonthefloorandMeggie’swhiteskinwasbeginningtoshowinirregularpatchesalloverherhead.Doubtinhereyes,sheturnedthentoFrank.
