           Itneveroccurredtoherthathemightdie,evenwhenFeeandPaddysanktotheirkneesbythebedandprayed,notknowingwhatelsetodo.AtmidnightPaddypriedMeggie’sarmsfromaroundthestillchild,andlaidhimdowntenderlyagainstthestackofpillows.

           Meggie’seyesflewopen;shehadhalffallentosleep,lulledbecauseHalhadstoppedstruggling."Oh,Daddy,he’sbetter!"shesaid.

           Paddyshookhishead;heseemedshriveledandold,thelamppickingupfrostybitsinhishair,frostybitsinhisweek-longbeard.
