           Thestormragedfiercelyallthatnight, butnothingofparticularnoteoccurred. Thenextmorning,however,whentheycamedowntobreakfast, theyfoundtheterriblestainofbloodonceagainonthefloor. "Idon’tthinkitcanbethefaultoftheParagonDetergent," saidWashington, "forIhavetrieditwitheverything. Itmustbetheghost." Heaccordinglyrubbedoutthestainasecondtime, butthesecondmorningitappearedagain. Thethirdmorningalsoitwasthere, thoughthelibraryhadbeenlockedupatnightbyMr.Otishimself, andthekeycarriedup-stairs. Thewholefamilywerenowquiteinterested; Mr.Otisbegantosuspect thathehadbeentoodogmaticinhisdenialoftheexistenceofghosts, Mrs.OtisexpressedherintentionofjoiningthePsychicalSociety, andWashingtonpreparedalonglettertoMessrs.MyersandPodmore onthesubjectofthePermanenceofSanguineousStains whenconnectedwithCrime. Thatnightalldoubtsabouttheobjectiveexistenceofphantasmata wereremovedforever.
