Theherdofshoveltuskhuddledtogetherforwarmth,theirthick,shaggycoatsprotectingthemfromtheworstofthestorm.Theyformedacircle,withthecalvesshiveringandbleatinginthecenter.Theirheads,eachcrownedwithamassiveantler,droopedtowardthesnow-coveredearth,eyesshutagainstthewhirlingsnow.Theirownbreathfrostedtheirmuzzlesastheyplantedthemselvesandendured.
...Intheirvariousdens,thewolvesandbearswaitedoutthestorms,onewiththecomfortoftheirpack,theothersolitaryandresigned.Whatevertheirhunger,nothingwoulddrivethemforthuntilafterthekeeningwindhadceaseditsweepingandtheblindingsnowhadwornitselfout.
Thewind,roaringinfromtheoceantobeatatthevillageofKamagua,toreatthehidesthatstretchedoverframesmadeofthebonesofgreatseacreatures.Whenthestormpassed,thetuskarrwhosehomethishadbeenforyearsuncountedknewtheywouldneedtorepairorreplacenetsandtraps.Theirdwellings,sturdythoughtheywere,werealwaysharmedwhenthisstormdescended.Theyhadallgatheredinsidethelargegroupdwellingthathadbeendugdeepintotheearth,lacingtheflapstightagainstthestormandlightingsmokyoillamps.
