"AtlastItookmycourageadeuxmains,andturningthehandleassoftlyasIcould,Iopenedthedooratinybit.Itwasquitedarkwithin;Icouldjustseetheoutlineofthewindows.Butinthedarknessthesoundofbreathing,becomingmoredistinct,wasappalling.AsIlistened,thiscontinued;buttherewasnoothersound.Ipushedthedooropenallatonce.Iwasafraidtoopenitslowly;Ifeltasiftheremightbesomedreadfulthingbehinditreadytopounceoutonme!ThenIswitchedontheelectriclight,andsteppedintotheroom.Ilookedfirstatthebed.Thesheetswereallcrumpledup,sothatIknewFatherhadbeeninbed;buttherewasagreatdarkredpatchinthecentreofthebed,andspreadingtotheedgeofit,thatmademyheartstandstill.
