Wehadtakenthemummyfromthesarcophagus,andpackeditforsafetyoftravelinaseparatecase.Duringthefirstnighttwoattemptsweremadetostealthingsfromthecart;andtwomenwerefounddeadinthemorning.
"Onthesecondnighttherecameonaviolentstorm,oneofthoseterriblesimoomsofthedesertwhichmakesonefeelhishelplessness.Wewereoverwhelmedwithdriftingsand.SomeofourBedouinshadfledbeforethestorm,hopingtofindshelter;therestofus,wrappedinourbournous,enduredwithwhatpatiencewecould.Inthemorning,whenthestormhadpassed,werecoveredfromunderthepilesofsandwhatwecouldofourimpedimenta.Wefoundthecaseinwhichthemummyhadbeenpackedallbroken,butthemummyitselfcouldnowherebefound.Wesearchedeverywherearound,anddugupthesandwhichhadpiledaroundus;butinvain.Wedidnotknowwhattodo,forTrelawnyhadhisheartsetontakinghomethatmummy.WewaitedawholedayinhopesthattheBedouins,whohadfled,wouldreturn;wehadablindhopethattheymighthaveinsomewayremovedthemummyfromthecart,andwouldrestoreit.Thatnight,justbeforedawn,Mr.Trelawnywokemeupandwhisperedinmyear:
"’WemustgobacktothetombintheValleyoftheSorcerer.ShownohesitationinthemorningwhenIgivetheorders!Ifyouaskanyquestionsastowherewearegoingitwillcreatesuspicion,andwilldefeatourpurpose."
