Corbeck,followedbySergeantDaw,cameintothehall.Thedooroftheboudoirwasopen,andwhentheysawusMr.Corbeckcamerunningin,followedmoreslowlybytheDetective.Therewasasortofchastenedjoyinhisfaceandmannerashesaidimpulsively:
"Rejoicewithme,mydearMissTrelawny,myluggagehascomeandallmythingsareintact!"Thenhisfacefellasheadded,"Exceptthelamps.Thelampsthatwereworthalltherestathousandtimes...."Hestopped,struckbythestrangepallorofherface.Thenhiseyes,followingherlookandmine,litontheclusteroflampsinthedrawer.Hegaveasortofcryofsurpriseandjoyashebentoverandtouchedthem:
"Mylamps!Mylamps!Thentheyaresafe—safe—safe!...Buthow,inthenameofGod—ofalltheGods—didtheycomehere?"
Weallstoodsilent.TheDetectivemadeadeepsoundofin-takingbreath.Ilookedathim,andashecaughtmyglanceheturnedhiseyesonMissTrelawnywhosebackwastowardhim.
Therewasinthemthesamelookofsuspicionwhichhadbeentherewhenhehadspokentomeofherbeingthefirsttofindherfatherontheoccasionsoftheattacks.
