"Iamnotatlibertytomentionanythingofmymission;whereitwasto,whatitwasfor,oranythingatallaboutit.SuchmattersareinconfidencebetweenMr.Trelawnyandmyself;Iampledgedtoabsolutesecrecy."
Hepaused,andanembarrassedlookcreptoverhisface.Suddenlyhesaid:
"Youaresure,MissTrelawny,yourFatherisnotwellenoughtoseemetoday?"
Alookofwondermentwasonherfaceinturn.Butitclearedatonce;—shestoodup,sayinginatoneinwhichdignityandgraciousnesswereblended:
"Comeandseeforyourself!"Shemovedtowardherfather’sroom;hefollowed,andIbroughtuptherear.
Mr.Corbeckenteredthesick-roomasthoughheknewit.Thereisanunconsciousattitudeorbearingtopersonsinnewsurroundingswhichthereisnomistaking.Eveninhisanxietytoseehispowerfulfriend,heglancedforamomentroundtheroom,asatafamiliarplace.Thenallhisattentionbecamefixedonthebed.Iwatchedhimnarrowly,forsomehowIfeltthatonthismandependedmuchofourenlightenmentregardingthestrangematterinwhichwewereinvolved.
