Ateighto’clockMissTrelawnyjoinedus,andIwasamazedaswellasdelightedtoseehowmuchgoodhernight’ssleephaddoneher.Shewasfairlyradiant;justasIhadseenheratourfirstmeetingandatthepicnic.Therewasevenasuggestionofcolourinhercheeks,which,however,lookedstartlinglywhiteincontrastwithherblackbrowsandscarletlips.Withherrestoredstrength,thereseemedtohavecomeatendernessevenexceedingthatwhichshehadatfirstshowntohersickfather.Icouldnotbutbemovedbythelovingtouchesasshefixedhispillowsandbrushedthehairfromhisforehead.
Iwasweariedoutmyselfwithmylongspellofwatching;andnowthatshewasonguardIstartedofftobed,blinkingmytiredeyesinthefulllightandfeelingthewearinessofasleeplessnightonmeallatonce.
Ihadagoodsleep,andafterlunchIwasabouttostartouttowalktoJermynStreet,whenInoticedanimportunatemanatthehalldoor.TheservantinchargewastheonecalledMorris,formerlythe"oddman,"butsincetheexodusoftheservantspromotedtobebutlerprotem.Thestrangerwasspeakingratherloudly,sothattherewasnodifficultyinunderstandinghisgrievance.Theservantmanwasrespectfulinbothwordsanddemeanour;buthestoodsquarelyinfrontofthegreatdoubledoor,sothattheothercouldnotenter.
