Whistlesblew,armourclashed,swordsrattled,goblinscursedandsworeandranhitherandthither,fallingoveroneanotherandgettingveryangry.Therewasaterribleoutcry,to-do,anddisturbance.
Bilbowasdreadfullyfrightened,buthehadthesensetounderstandwhathadhappenedandtosneakbehindabigbarrelwhichhelddrinkforthegoblin-guards,andsogetoutofthewayandavoidbeingbumpedinto,trampledtodeath,orcaughtbyfeel.
"Imustgettothedoor,Imustgettothedoor!"hekeptonsayingtohimself,butitwasalongtimebeforeheventuredtotry.Thenitwaslikeahorriblegameofblind-man’sbuff.Theplacewasfullofgoblinsrunningabout,andthepoorlittlehobbitdodgedthiswayandthat,wasknockedoverbyagoblinwhocouldnotmakeoutwhathehadbumpedinto,scrambledawayonallfours,slippedbetweenthelegsofthecaptainjustintime,gotup,andranforthedoor.
Itwasstillajar,butagoblinhadpusheditnearlyto.Bilbostruggledbuthecouldnotmoveit.Hetriedtosqueezethroughthecrack.Hesqueezedandsqueezed,andhestuck!Itwasawful.Hisbuttonshadgotwedgedontheedgeofthedoorandthedoor-post.
