Butsomehowhewascomforted.ItwasrathersplendidtobewearingablademadeinGondolinforthegoblin-warsofwhichsomanysongshadsung;andalsohehadnoticedthatsuchweaponsmadeagreatimpressionongoblinsthatcameuponthemsuddenly.
"Goback?"hethought."Nogoodatall!Gosideways?Impossible!Goforward?Onlythingtodo!Onwego!"Souphegot,andtrottedalongwithhislittleswordheldinfrontofhimandonehandfeelingthewall,andhisheartallofapatterandapitter.
NowcertainlyBilbowasinwhatiscalledatightplace.Butyoumustrememberitwasnotquitesotightforhimasitwouldhavebeenformeorforyou.Hobbitsarenotquitelikeordinarypeople;andafteralliftheirholesarenicecheeryplacesandproperlyaired,quitedifferentfromthetunnelsofthegoblins,stilltheyaremoreusedtotunnellingthanweare,andtheydonoteasilylosetheirsenseofdirectionunderground-notwhentheirheadshaverecoveredfrombeingbumped.Alsotheycanmoveveryquietly,andhideeasily,andrecoverwonderfullyfromfallsandbruises,andtheyhaveafundofwisdomandwisesayingsthatmenhavemostlyneverheardorhaveforgottenlongago.
