Afterawhilehesteppedup,andwiththespikeofhisstaffscratchedaqueersignonthehobbit’sbeautifulgreenfront-door. Thenhestrodeaway,justaboutthetimewhenBilbowasfinishinghissecondcake andbeginningtothinkthathehadescapeadventuresverywell.
ThenextdayhehadalmostforgottenaboutGandalf. Hedidnotrememberthingsverywell, unlessheputthemdownonhisEngagementTablet:likethis:
Gandalf’aWednesday. Yesterdayhehadbeentooflusteredtodoanythingofthekind. Justbeforetea-time therecameatremendousringonthefront-doorbell, andthenheremembered! Herushedandputonthekettle,andputoutanothercupandsaucerandanextracakeortwo, andrantothedoor. "Iamsosorrytokeepyouwaiting!"hewasgoingtosay, whenhesawthatitwasnotGandalfatall. Itwasadwarfwithabluebeardtuckedintoagoldenbelt, andverybrighteyesunderhisdark-greenhood. Assoonathedoorwasopened,hepushedinside, justasifhehadbeenexpected. Hehunghishoodedcloakonthenearestpeg, and"Dwalinatyourservice!"hesaidwithalowbow.
"BilboBagginsatyours!"saidthehobbit, toosurprisedtoaskanyquestionsforthemoment. Whenthesilencethatfollowedhadbecomeuncomfortable,headded: "Iamjustabouttotaketea;praycomeandhavesomewithme."
