Heknewthatsomethingunexpectedmighthappen,andhehardlydaredtohopethattheywouldpasswithoutfearfuladventureoverthosegreattallmountainswithlonelypeaksandvalleyswherenokingruled.Theydidnot.Allwaswell,untilonedaytheymetathunderstorm-morethanathunderstorm,athunder-battle.Youknowhowterrificareallybigthunderstormcanbedowninthelandandinariver-valley;especiallyattimeswhentwogreatthunderstormsmeetandclash.Moreterriblestillarethunderandlightninginthemountainsatnight,whenstormscomeupfromEastandWestandmakewar.Thelightningsplintersonthepeaks,androcksshiver,andgreatcrashessplittheairandgorollingandtumblingintoeverycaveandhollow;andthedarknessisfilledwithoverwhelmingnoiseandsuddenlight.Bilbohadneverseenorimaginedanythingofthekind.Theywerehighupinanarrowplace,withadreadfulfallintoadimvalleyatonesideofthem.Theretheywereshelteringunderahangingrockforthenight,andhelaybeneathablanketandshookfromheadtotoe.Whenhepeepedoutinthelightning-flashes,hesawthatacrossthevalleythestone-giantswereoutandwerehurlingrocksatoneanotherfora.game,andcatchingthem,andtossingthemdownintothedarknesswheretheysmashedamongthetreesfarbelow,orsplinteredintolittlebitswithabang.Thencameawindandarain,andthewindwhippedtherainandthehailaboutineverydirection,sothatanoverhangingrockwasnoprotectionatall.
