Someofthedwarveswhohappenedtobeoutside(Iwasoneluckily-afineadventurousladinthosedays,alwayswanderingabout,anditsavedmylifethatday)-well,fromagoodwayoffwesawthedragonsettleonourmountaininaspoutofflame. Thenhecamedowntheslopesandwhenhereachedthewoodstheyallwentupinfire. BythattimeallthebellswereringinginDaleandthewarriorswerearming. Thedwarvesrushedoutoftheirgreatgate;buttherewasthedragonwaitingforthem. Noneescapedthatway. TheriverrushedupinsteamandafogfellonDale,andinthefogthedragoncameonthemanddestroyedmostofthewarriors-theusualunhappystory,itwasonlytoocommoninthosedays. ThenhewentbackandcreptinthroughtheFrontGateandroutedoutallthehalls,andlanes,andtunnels,alleys,cellars,mansionsandpassages. Afterthattherewerenodwarvesleftaliveinside,andhetookalltheirwealthforhimself.
