ThesunhadsetwhenturningwithanothersweeptowardstheEasttheforest-riverrushedintotheLongLake.Thereithadawidemouthwithstonyclifflikegatesateithersidewhosefeetwerepiledwithshingles.TheLongLake!Bilbohadneverimaginedthatanywaterthatwasnottheseacouldlooksobig.Itwassowidethattheoppositeshoreslookedsmallandfar,butitwassolongthatitsnortherlyend,whichpointedtowardstheMountain,couldnotbeseenatall.OnlyfromthemapdidBilboknowthatawayupthere,wherethestarsoftheWainwerealreadytwinkling,theRunningRivercamedownintothelakefromDaleandwiththeForestRiverfilledwithdeepwaterswhatmustoncehavebeenagreatdeeprockyvalley.
