ThenthehurryingwateroftheForestRiversweptallthecompanyofcasksandtubsawaytothenorthbank,inwhichithadeatenoutawidebay.Thishadashinglyshoreunderhangingbanksandwaswalledattheeasternendbyalittlejuttingcapeofhardrock.Ontheshallowshoremostofthebarrelsranaground,thoughafewwentontobumpagainstthestonypier.Therewerepeopleonthelook-outonthebanks.Theyquicklypoledandpushedallthebarrelstogetherintotheshallows,andwhentheyhadcountedthemtheyropedthemtogetherandleftthemtillthemorning.Poordwarves!Bilbowasnotsobadlyoffnow.Heslippedfromhisbarrelandwadedashore,andthensneakedalongtosomehutsthathecouldseenearthewater’sedge.Henolongerthoughttwiceaboutpickingupasupperuninvitedifhegotthechance,hehadbeenobligedtodoitforsolong,andheknewonlytoowellwhatitwastobereallyhungry,notmerelypolitelyinterestedinthedaintiesofawell-filledlarder.Alsohehadcaughtaglimpseofafirethroughthetrees,andthatappealedtohimwithhisdrippingandraggedclothesclingingtohimcoldandclammy.
Thereisnoneedtotellyoumuchofhisadventuresthatnight,fornowwearedrawingneartheendoftheeastwardjourneyandcomingtothelastandgreatestadventure,sowemusthurryon.
