Asaboyheusedtopractisethrowingstonesatthings,untilrabbitsandsquirrels,andevenbirds,gotoutofhiswayasquickaslightningiftheysawhimstoop;andevengrownuphehadstillspentadealofhistimeatquoits,dart-throwing,shootingatthewand,bowls,ninepinsandotherquietgamesoftheaimingandthrowingsort-indeedhecoulddolotsofthings,besidesblowingsmoke-rings,askingriddlesandcooking,thatIhaven’thadtimetotellyouabout.Thereisnotimenow.Whilehewaspickingupstones,thespiderhadreachedBombur,andsoonhewouldhavebeendead.AtthatmomentBilbothrew.Thestonestruckthespiderplunkonthehead,anditdroppedsenselessoffthetree,floptotheground,withallitslegscurledup.
Thenextstonewentwhizzingthroughabigweb,snappingitscords,andtakingoffthespidersittinginthemiddleofit,whack,dead.Afterthattherewasadealofcommotioninthespider-colony,andtheyforgotthedwarvesforabit,Icantellyou.TheycouldnotseeBilbo,buttheycouldmakeagoodguessatthedirectionfromwhichthestoneswerecoming.Asquickaslightningtheycamerunningandswingingtowardsthehobbit,flingingouttheirlongthreadsinalldirections,tilltheairseemedfullofwavingsnares.Bilbo,however,soonslippedawaytoadifferentplace.Theideacametohimtoleadthefuriousspidersfurtherandfurtherawayfromthedwarves,ifhecould;tomakethemcurious,excitedandangryallatonce.Whenaboutfiftyhadgoneofftotheplacewherehehadstoodbefore,hethrewsomemorestonesatthese,andatothersthathadstoppedbehind;thendancingamongthetreeshebegantosingasongtoinfuriatethemandbringthemallafterhim,andalsotoletthedwarveshearhisvoice.
