Nowhesentaswiftandsureshotintotheleapingbeast.Asitreachedthefurtherbankitstumbled.Theshadowsswalloweditup,buttheyheardthesoundofhoovesquicklyfalterandthengostill.Beforetheycouldshoutinpraiseoftheshot,however,adreadfulwailfromBilboputallthoughtsofvenisonoutoftheirminds."Bomburhasfallenin!Bomburisdrowning!"hecried.Itwasonlytootrue.Bomburhadonlyonefootonthelandwhenthehartboredownonhim,andsprangoverhim.Hehadstumbled,thrustingtheboatawayfromthebank,andthentoppledbackintothedarkwater,hishandsslippingofftheslimyrootsattheedge,whiletheboatspanslowlyoffanddisappeared.
Theycouldstillseehishoodabovethewaterwhentheyrantothebank.
Quicklytheyflungaropewithahooktowardshim.Hishandcaughtit,andheypulledhimtotheshore.Hewasdrenchedfromhairtoboots,ofcourse,butthatwasnottheworst.Whentheylaidhimonthebankhewasalreadyfastasleep,withonehandclutchingtheropesotightthattheycouldnotgetitfromhisgrasp;andfastasleepheremainedinspiteofalltheycoulddo.Theywerestillstandingoverhim,cursingtheirillluck,andBombur’sclumsiness,andlamentingthelossoftheboatwhichmadeitimpossibleforthemtogobackandlookforthehart,whentheybecameawareofthedimblowingofhornsinthewoodandthesoundasofdogsbayingfaroff.Thentheyallfellsilent;andastheysatitseemedtheycouldhearthenoiseofagreathuntgoingbytothenorthofthepath,thoughtheysawnosignofit.Theretheysatforalongwhileanddidnotdaretomakeamove.Bombursleptonwithasmileonhisfatface,asifhenolongercaredforallthetroublesthatvexedthem.
Suddenlyonthepathaheadappearedsomewhitedeer,ahindandfawnsassnowywhiteastheharthadbeendark.
