Thedwarveslistenedandshooktheirbeards,fortheyknewthattheymustsoonventureintothatforestandthatafterthemountainsitwastheworstoftheperilstheyhadtopassbeforetheycametothedragon’sstronghold.Whendinnerwasovertheybegantotelltalesoftheirown,butBeornseemedtobegrowingdrowsyandpaidlittleheedtothem.Theyspokemostofgoldandsilverandjewelsandthemakingofthingsbysmith-craft,andBeorndidnotappeartocareforsuchthings:therewerenothingsofgoldorsilverinhishall,andfewsavetheknivesweremadeofmetalatall.Theysatlongatthetablewiththeirwoodendrinking-bowlsfilledwithmead.Thedarknightcameonoutside.Thefiresinthemiddleofthehallwerebuiltwithfreshlogsandthetorcheswereputout,andstilltheysatinthelightofthedancingflameswiththepillarsofthehousestandingtallbehindthem,ariddarkatthetopliketreesoftheforest.Whetheritwasmagicornot,itseemedtoBilbothatheheardasoundlikewindinthebranchesstirringintherafters,andthehootofowls.Soonhebegantonodwithsleepandthevoicesseemedtogrowfaraway,untilhewokewithastart.Thegreatdoorhadcreakedandslammed.Beornwasgone.Thedwarvesweresittingcross-leggedonthefloorroundthefire,andpresentlytheybegantosing.Someoftheverseswerelikethis,butthereweremanymore,andtheirsingingwentonforalongwhile:
