ItseemedthatBilbowasnotgoingtobeeatenafterall.Thewizardandtheeagle-lordappearedtoknowoneanotherslightly,andeventobeonfriendlyterms.AsamatteroffactGandalf,whohadoftenbeeninthemountains,hadoncerenderedaservicetotheeaglesandhealedtheirlordfromanarrow-wound.Soyousee’prisoners’hadmeant’prisonersrescuedfromthegoblins’only,andnotcaptivesoftheeagles.AsBilbolistenedtothetalkofGandalfherealizedthatatlasttheyweregoingtoescapereallyandtrulyfromthedreadfulmountains.
