Theyburstonthegroundinthemiddleofthecircleandwentoffincolouredsparksandsmoke.Aspeciallylargeonehitthechiefwolfonthenose,andheleapedintheairtenfeet,andthenrushedroundandroundthecirclebitingandsnappingevenattheotherwolvesinhisangerandfright.
ThedwarvesandBilboshoutedandcheered.Therageofthewolveswasterribletosee,andthecommotiontheymadefilledalltheforest.Wolvesareafraidoffireatalltimes,butthiswasamosthorribleanduncannyfire.Ifasparkgotintheircoatsitstuckandburnedintothem,andunlesstheyrolledoverquicktheyweresoonallinflames.Verysoonallaboutthegladewolveswererollingoverandovertoputoutthesparksontheirbacks,whilethosethatwereburningwererunningabouthowlingandsettingothersalight,tilltheirownfriendschasedthemawayandtheyfledoffdowntheslopescryingandyammeringandlookingforwater.

Hesweptupintotheair,andimmediatelytwoofhisguardsfromtherocksateitherhandleapeduptofollowhim.TheycircledupintheskyandlookeddownupontheringoftheWargs,atinyspotfarfarbelow.Buteagleshavekeeneyesandcanseesmallthingsatagreatdistance.ThelordoftheeaglesoftheMistyMountainshadeyesthatcouldlookatthesununblinking,andcouldseearabbitmovingonthegroundamilebeloweveninthemoonlight.Sothoughhecouldnotseethepeopleinthetrees,hecouldmakeoutthecommotionamongthewolvesandseethetinyflashesoffire,andhearthehowlingandyelpingcomeupfaintfromfarbeneathhim.
