Thepoorlittlehobbitsatdowninthehall andputhisheadinhishands, andwonderedwhathadhappened, andwhatwasgoingtohappen,andwhethertheywouldallstaytosupper. Thenthebellrangagainlouderthanever,andhehadtoruntothedoor. Itwasnotfourafterall,itwasFIVE. Anotherdwarfhadcomealongwhilehewaswonderinginthehall. Hehadhardlyturnedtheknob, beforetheywereallinside,bowingandsaying"atyourservice"oneafteranother. Dori,Nori,Ori,Oin,andGloinweretheirnames; andverysoontwopurplehoods,agreyhood,abrownhood,andawhitehoodwerehangingonthepegs, andofftheymarchedwiththeirbroadhandsstuckintheirgoldandsilverbeltstojointheothers. Alreadyithadalmostbecomeathrong. Somecalledforale,andsomeforporter,andoneforcoffee,andallofthemforcakes;sothehobbitwaskeptverybusyforawhile. Abigjugofcoffeebadjustbeensetinthehearth, theseed-cakesweregone,andthedwarveswerestartingonaroundofbutteredscones, whentherecame-aloudknock. Notaring,butahardrat-tatonthehobbit’sbeautifulgreendoor. Somebodywasbangingwithastick!
