           Hehopedthatitmightbeconqueredwithoutanyrevelationtotheworldofthemonstrousthingithadescaped.Astheshadowsgathered,thenativescommencedtodispersehomeward,anxioustobarthemselvesindoorsdespitethepresentevidencethatallhumanlocksandboltswereuselessbeforeaforcethatcouldbendtreesandcrushhouseswhenitchose. Theyshooktheirheadsatthevisitors’plantostandguardattheFryeruinsneartheglen; and,astheyleft,hadlittleexpectancyofeverseeingthewatchersagain. 

           Therewererumblingsunderthehillsthatnight,andthewhippoorwillspipedthreateningly. Onceinawhileawind,sweepingupoutofColdSpringGlen,wouldbringatouchofineffablefoetortotheheavynightair; suchafoetorasallthreeofthewatchershadsmelledoncebefore,whentheystoodaboveadyingthingthathadpassedforfifteenyearsandahalfasahumanbeing. Butthelooked-forterrordidnotappear. Whateverwasdownthereintheglenwasbidingitstime,andArmitagetoldhiscolleaguesitwouldbesuicidaltotrytoattackitinthedark. 

           Morningcamewanly,andthenight-soundsceased. Itwasagrey,bleakday,withnowandthenadrizzleofrain; andheavierandheaviercloudsseemedtobepilingthemselvesupbeyondthehillstothenorth-west. ThemenfromArkhamwereundecidedwhattodo. SeekingshelterfromtheincreasingrainfallbeneathoneofthefewundestroyedFryeoutbuildings,theydebatedthewisdomofwaiting,oroftakingtheaggressiveandgoingdownintothegleninquestoftheirnameless,monstrousquarry.
