Almosteightfeettall,andcarryingacheapnewvalisefromOsborne’sgeneralstore,thisdarkandgoatishgargoyleappearedonedayinArkham inquestofthedreadedvolumekeptunderlockandkeyatthecollegelibrary—thehideousNecronomiconofthemadArabAbdulAlhazredinOlausWormius’Latinversion,asprintedinSpainintheseventeenthcentury. Hehadneverseenacitybefore,buthadnothoughtsavetofindhiswaytotheuniversitygrounds; whereindeed,hepassedheedlesslybythegreatwhite-fangedwatchdogthatbarkedwithunnaturalfuryandenmity,andtuggedfranticallyatitsstoutchain.
WilburhadwithhimthepricelessbutimperfectcopyofDrDee’sEnglishversionwhichhisgrandfatherhadbequeathedhim, anduponreceivingaccesstotheLatincopyheatoncebegantocollatethetwotextswiththeaimofdiscoveringacertainpassagewhichwouldhavecomeonthe751stpageofhisowndefectivevolume. Thismuchhecouldnotcivillyrefrainfromtellingthelibrarian—thesameeruditeHenryArmitage (A.M.Miskatonic,Ph.D.Princeton,Litt.D.JohnsHopkins) whohadoncecalledatthefarm,andwhonowpolitelypliedhimwithquestions.
