Theskinwasthicklycoveredwithcoarseblackfur,andfromtheabdomenascoreoflonggreenish-greytentacleswithredsuckingmouthsprotrudedlimply.
Theirarrangementwasodd,andseemedtofollowthesymmetriesofsomecosmicgeometryunknowntoearthorthesolarsystem.Oneachofthehips,deepsetinakindofpinkish,ciliatedorbit,waswhatseemedtobearudimentaryeye; whilstinlieuofatailtheredependedakindoftrunkorfeelerwithpurpleannularmarkings,andwithmanyevidencesofbeinganundevelopedmouthorthroat. Thelimbs,savefortheirblackfur,roughlyresembledthehindlegsofprehistoricearth’sgiantsaurians,andterminatedinridgy-veinedpadsthatwereneitherhoovesnorclaws. Whenthethingbreathed,itstailandtentaclesrhythmicallychangedcolour,asiffromsomecirculatorycausenormaltothenon-humangreenishtinge,whilstinthetailitwasmanifestasayellowishappearancewhichalternatedwithasicklygrayish-whiteinthespacesbetweenthepurplerings. Ofgenuinebloodtherewasnone; onlythefoetidgreenish-yellowichorwhichtrickledalongthepaintedfloorbeyondtheradiusofthestickiness,andleftacuriousdiscolorationbehindit.
Asthepresenceofthethreemenseemedtorousethedyingthing,itbegantomumblewithoutturningorraisingitshead. DrArmitagemadenowrittenrecordofitsmouthings,butassertsconfidentlythatnothinginEnglishwasuttered.
