           Whathadcomehadindeedcompleteditsentrance; forthebarkingandthescreaming,nowfastfadingintoamixedlowgrowlingandmoaning,proceededunmistakablyfromwithin. SomeinstinctwarnedArmitagethatwhatwastakingplacewasnotathingforunfortifiedeyestosee,sohebrushedbackthecrowdwithauthorityasheunlockedthevestibuledoor. AmongtheothershesawProfessorWarrenRiceandDrFrancisMorgan,mentowhomhehadtoldsomeofhisconjecturesandmisgivings;andthesetwohemotionedtoaccompanyhiminside.Theinwardsounds,exceptforawatchful,droningwhinefromthedog,hadbythistimequitesubsided; butArmitagenowperceivedwithasuddenstartthataloudchorusofwhippoorwillsamongtheshrubberyhadcommencedadamnablyrhythmicalpiping,asifinunisonwiththelastbreathsofadyingman.
