           EarlSawyerwentouttotheWhateleyplacewithbothsetsofreportersandcameramen,andcalledtheirattentiontothequeerstenchwhichnowseemedtotrickledownfromthesealedupperspaces. Itwas,hesaid,exactlylikeasmellhehadfoundinthetoolshedabandonedwhenthehousewasfinallyrepaired; andlikethefaintodourswhichhesometimesthoughthecaughtnearthestonecircleonthemountains. Dunwichfolkreadthestorieswhentheyappeared,andgrinnedovertheobviousmistakes. Theywondered,too,whythewritersmadesomuchofthefactthatOldWhateleyalwayspaidforhiscattleingoldpiecesofextremelyancientdate. TheWhateleyshadreceivedtheirvisitorswithill-concealeddistaste,thoughtheydidnotdarecourtfurtherpublicitybyaviolentresistanceorrefusaltotalk.
