"Hownow,mylordEdward,myprince?Hastbeenmindedtocozenme,thegoodKingthyfather,wholoveththee,andkindlyuseththee,withasorryjest?"
PoorTomwaslistening,aswellashisdazedfacultieswouldlethim,tothebeginningofthisspeech;butwhenthewords‘me,thegoodKing’felluponhisear,hisfaceblanched,andhedroppedasinstantlyuponhiskneesasifashothadbroughthimthere.Liftinguphishands,heexclaimed—
"ThoutheKing?ThenamIundoneindeed!"
ThisspeechseemedtostuntheKing.Hiseyeswanderedfromfacetofaceaimlessly,thenrested,bewildered,upontheboybeforehim.Thenhesaidinatoneofdeepdisappointment—
