MeantimeMileswasgrowingsufficientlytiredofconfinementandinaction.Butnowhistrialcameon,tohisgreatgratification,andhethoughthecouldwelcomeanysentenceprovidedafurtherimprisonmentshouldnotbeapartofit.Buthewasmistakenaboutthat.Hewasinafinefurywhenhefoundhimselfdescribedasa‘sturdyvagabond’andsentencedtosittwohoursinthestocksforbearingthatcharacterandforassaultingthemasterofHendonHall.Hispretensionsastobrothershipwithhisprosecutor,andrightfulheirshiptotheHendonhonoursandestates,wereleftcontemptuouslyunnoticed,asbeingnotevenworthexamination.
Heragedandthreatenedonhiswaytopunishment,butitdidnogood;hewassnatchedroughlyalongbytheofficers,andgotanoccasionalcuff,besides,forhisirreverentconduct.
