TomCanty,splendidlyarrayed,mountedaprancingwar-steed,whoserichtrappingsalmostreachedtotheground;his‘uncle,’theLordProtectorSomerset,similarlymounted,tookplaceinhisrear;theKing’sGuardformedinsingleranksoneitherside,cladinburnishedarmour;aftertheProtectorfollowedaseeminglyinterminableprocessionofresplendentnoblesattendedbytheirvassals;afterthesecamethelordmayorandthealdermanicbody,incrimsonvelvetrobes,andwiththeirgoldchainsacrosstheirbreasts;andafterthesetheofficersandmembersofalltheguildsofLondon,inrichraiment,andbearingtheshowybannersoftheseveralcorporations.Alsointheprocession,asaspecialguardofhonourthroughthecity,wastheAncientandHonourableArtilleryCompany—anorganisationalreadythreehundredyearsoldatthattime,andtheonlymilitarybodyinEnglandpossessingtheprivilege(whichitstillpossessesinourday)ofholdingitselfindependentofthecommandsofParliament.Itwasabrilliantspectacle,andwashailedwithacclamationsallalongtheline,asittookitsstatelywaythroughthepackedmultitudesofcitizens.
